This authentic fasolakia recipe (Greek green beans) has been passed down through my family through generations and always reminds me of home.

This green bean dish is perfect as a side dish or as your main meal, alongside some delicious feta cheese and some crusty bread.

This vegetarian green bean stew is filled with nutrients and antioxidants and is simple to prepare even for the beginner cook. It’s an easy recipe, uses a lot of olive oil, and is one of our favorite vegetable dishes.

Fasolakia was a regular meal at my Yiayia’s house and this family recipe feels like a warm hug and coming home. As soon as the delicous aroma of this flavorful dish hits the air, I am transported back to my childhood and my grandmother’s kitchen.

Fasolakia is a simple dish made of crisp green beans that are braised in a rich tomato sauce with plenty of olive oil. This delicious recipe is packed with both taste and nutrients, and can be made in a variety of ways.

Today, we’re sharing my yiayia’s cherished traditional recipe, a culinary gem from my upbringing. Feel free to customize it according to your taste preferences—whether that involves incorporating carrots or peas, introducing meats like lamb, beef, or ground beef, or experimenting with diverse spices, such as the refreshing essence of mint!

This meal can be a main course on its own and is perfect for a cool winter night. If you place it in an airtight container (use glass!), this is a great meal to warm up the next day, as well.

Ingredients for easy fasolakia recipe

Fasolakia is a green beans recipe and a classic Greek dish. Filled with healthy ingredients such as extra virgin olive oil and a variety of vegetables and spices, it is a staple in our household.

Our authentic fasolakia recipe is made with simple ingredients such as fresh tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh green beans, fresh parsley, and potatoes.

The ingredients for this fasolakia recipe (Greek green beans and potatoes) is as follows:

One large onion

Fresh garlic

Green beans

Potatoes

Crushed tomatoes

Chopped parsley

Oregano

Salt and Pepper

Cinnamon stick (optional)

Bay leaves

Extra virgin olive oil

Fresh bread

Feta cheese (Always choose the feta made with sheep’s milk – trust me, it tastes much better!)

How to make fasolakia greek recipe

This vegetarian dish is cooked over medium-high heat in a large pot on the stovetop. It’s a very simple and easy recipe to cook at home.

Begin by heating a large pot on the stovetop over medium heat with olive oil.

Trim the ends of your green beans.

Cut the potatoes into wedges.

Chop one large onion and throw in the pot to saute, along with minced garlic.

Add the green beans and potatoes and stir together for a few minutes.

Add the crushed tomatoes and water.

Add your salt, pepper, oregano, bay leaves, and a cinnamon stick.

Cover your pot and let the food simmer on low heat for 30 minutes.

Remove cover and cook 5 minutes until the liquid reduces. (Not completely, though! Check pic below!)

When done, you will have tender green beans and potatoes, and you should still have some liquid in your pot.

Serve alongside feta cheese and fresh bread. You can use the bread to dip into the sauce!

You can change up the ingredients in this recipe to include extra veggies or spices, such as mint, carrots, lemon, etc. You can also choose to add meat (we recommend lamb or beef).

Fasolakia Recipe

Greek green beans (φασολάκια)
Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 35 minutes

Ingredients
  

  • 16 oz. Green beans 500 g
  • 2/3 cup Crushed tomatoes
  • 6 Yellow Potatoes Use potatoes of your choice.
  • 1 Onion Chopped
  • 1 clove Garlic Minced
  • Fresh parsley To taste
  • 2 tsp Oregano
  • 1 tsp Salt
  • 1 tsp Pepper
  • 2 Bay leaves Optional
  • 1 Cinnamon Stick Optional
  • 2/3 cup Water
  • 4 tbsp Extra Virgin Olive Oil 60 ml

Instructions
 

  • Heat up a large pot with olive oil over medium heat.
  • Trim the ends of your green beans and cut your potatoes into small wedges. Set aside.
  • Chop one large onion and then put in pot to saute.
  • Add minced garlic and saute.
  • Once onions and garlic are soft, add your green beans and potates to the pot.
  • Stir everything together.
  • Add crushed tomatoes, as well as the water into the pot, and mix.
  • Add salt, pepper, oregano, bay leaves, and a cinnamon stick.
  • Cover pot and let the food simmer on low heat for 30 minutes.
  • Remove cover and cook 5 minutes until the liquid reduces. (We do not want to remove all the liquid. We just want to reduce the sauce slightly and then thicken.)
  • When done, you will have tender green beans and potatoes, and you should still have some liquid in your pot.
  • Serve alongside feta cheese and fresh bread. Make sure to dip the bread into your sauce as you eat! Enjoy! Opa!
